Tranee is a Chrome Extension designed to make language learning feel less like studying and more like entertainment. Instead of drilling vocabulary lists or grinding through grammar exercises, Tranee lets you learn languages by simply watching content you already enjoy — movies on Netflix, tutorials on YouTube, lectures on Coursera, or any online video that has subtitles.
The core concept is simple: when your brain encounters a new word in a real conversational context — hearing it spoken aloud, reading the subtitle, and immediately understanding its meaning through AI translation — that memory is dramatically stronger than any flashcard-based rote memorization. This is the principle of comprehensible input, a language acquisition theory developed by linguist Stephen Krashen, and it's the foundation on which Tranee is built.
Tranee works silently in the background. Once installed and signed in, it detects when you're on a supported video platform, automatically fetches available subtitle tracks, translates or pairs them with your native language, and overlays both subtitle layers directly onto the video player. There's nothing to configure every time — it just works.
